Liverpool beat Austrian team LASK 4-0 at Anfield on Thursday in the Europa League. Mohamed Salah scored his 199th goal for the Reds. The win and Toulouse’s 0-0 draw in the other game in the group gave Jurgen Klopp’s team the top spot. This means they will easily go to the round of 16 in the Europa League and won’t have to play in a play-off game.
After beating LASK 4-0 at Anfield, Cody Gakpo scored twice and Mohamed Salah scored his 199th goal for the club. This secured Liverpool’s spot in the UEFA Europa League Round of 16.
When Liverpool played Manchester City over the weekend and tied 1-1, Jurgen Klopp made nine changes. However, it didn’t make a difference as Luis Diaz’s shot and Gakpo’s close-range finish put Liverpool ahead twice in the first 15 minutes.
Salah scored a third goal from the penalty spot in the 51st minute, bringing the score one goal away from the goal-scoring mark. After that, things went smoothly, and Gakpo scored his second goal of the night in extra time to make it official.
Because of this, Liverpool wins Group E with 12 points, which is enough to go to the Round of 16. Union Saint-Gilloise is in third place with five points, followed by LASK in last place with three.
Now, Liverpool will finish their Group E quest on December 14 at Union SG. Toulouse is hosted by LASK.
Liverpool’s night at Anfield looked like it would be any other night, and it was. As they cruised to a win, the Reds barely moved out of second gear. This makes it 10 wins in 10 games at home this season.
Along with a clean sheet and goals from his players, Klopp made good use of his team. This is especially important since Caoimhin Kelleher will be filling in for the injured Alisson for a number of games coming up. That shutout will give the Irishman a much-needed confidence boost.
Because Toulouse tied Union SG at home, they are now guaranteed to make it to the round of 16, and they don’t have to worry about the UEFA Europa League until March. In fact, Jurgen Klopp can give his young players a chance to play in the last Group E game in Belgium. This could be very helpful given how busy December is with games.
