It wasn’t Javi Manquillo or Dejan Lovren who waved their tongues the most against Southampton. It was a five-foot-tall foam Liver bird that was happy.

That’s better, it looks like a Liver bird.

Mighty Red, Liverpool’s mascot, made an appearance on the field before the first game of the season. Mighty Red was created in 2012 to help the club’s work with kids and the community.

People were very angry on social media, especially since the club had already said Mighty Red would not be on the field.

The club did describe his new job, saying, “For the 2014–15 season, Mighty Red, Liverpool’s official mascot, has been given an extra duty: helping out with the club’s young official mascots on match days.”

“Besides giving the child great photo opportunities, Mighty’s job will be to help walk the mascots off the field and back to their families, which will make the experience even more special for the kids.”
