Liverpool beat West Ham 5-1 at Anfield to move on to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and make it more likely that they will play at Wembley again.
The Reds got off to a great start with a great goal from Dominik Szoboszlai. After the break, Curtis Jones scored the second goal from a tight angle.
Cody Gakpo put Liverpool three goals ahead before Jarrod Bowen pulled one back for the Hammers. However, Mohamed Salah and Jones scored later goals to settle the game.
Jurgen Klopp’s team will play Fulham in the semi-final, which will have two legs in the new year.
Lewis Steele from Mail Sport was at Anfield and gave both teams’ player grades.
6.5 for Caoimhin Kelleher
He scored almost an “N/A” because he didn’t have to do much. West Ham didn’t have a goal until the 71st minute, and it went wide.
Bowen scored, and Kelleher didn’t have much to do about it. He was also in charge when he came in for a cross in the second half.
6.5 for Joe Gomez
He has now played 195 times for Liverpool. He still hasn’t scored a goal for the team, but it looks like he’s getting closer!
Gomez had a few chances, but he messed up his lines here. As the season has gone on, the 26-year-old has gotten a lot better as an attacking full-back.
8 grader Jarell Quansah
It’s hard to believe he played in League One just last year. The best thing you can say about Quansah is that he looks like he’s been with Chelsea for years. At ease with the ball and aware of his situation and strategy.
He did a great job tackling Bowen early on, and then his quick grab set up Liverpool’s first goal. Put in good passes that broke the lines.
6.5 for Virgil Van Dijk
He always sets the pace by playing out from the back, and he helped young Jarell Quansah learn how to play the game.
Was taken off after 60 minutes, and there wasn’t much to say about Van Dijk’s defense because West Ham didn’t offer much.
Seventh Kostas Tsimikas
He slipped in to make a crucial interception when West Ham launched a rare drive with the score 1-0, and Bowen tried to set up Fornals at the back post on 54 minutes.
The Greek full-back, as always, gave the attack width and energy.
Wide enough. When Bowen tried to find Fornals at the back post, this stop was great.
6.5 for Wataru Endo
There were a few bad passes at the start, but the Japan leader got better as the game went on and did a good job of stopping play on defense.
He won’t be as useful in the team when he goes to the Asia Cup, but the fact that he was brought on early suggests that he could be very important against Arsenal.
Dóri Szoboszlai, 8
Even though Szoboszlai made a few mistakes early on, this was his best game in a month.
Liverpool scored five goals, and this was the best of them. With a little luck, he could have scored a couple more. If you let him drift into wide places, he’ll do his best.
Curtis Jones, 9
Just beats Elliott for the man of the match award because he scored two goals.
Jones has grown up this season as a defender, but this was a different game for him. The Scouser rushed through the middle of the field in an offensive way.
The first goal was well done, and the second was even better.
8.50 for Harvey Elliott
Given a look at what Liverpool’s right wing could look like without Salah, who is away at the African Cup of Nations,
Always a source of energy, whether they are cutting in, taking on players, or going to the byline.
He was unlucky not to score himself, but he never stopped running and making things.
Codey Gakpo, 8
Just the fact that he was taken off could mean that the Dutchman will start against Arsenal instead of Nunez.
He was a good leader of the line, whether they were going deep or following the rules. His goal was a beautiful finish, and Gakpo’s play with the others was great.
I’ve booked Darwin Nunez for 7
It’s been 11 games and Nunez still hasn’t scored, but this was a much better game with the Uruguayan on the left side.
They should have scored because Areola made a great save near the end, but Nunez was a constant bother.Different kinds of
Ibrahim Konate (in place of Van Dijk, 60)
6 points from Trent Alexander-Arnold (for Endo, 60)
6 Mohamed Salah (for Szoboszlai in the 60th minute)
Conor Bradley (in place of Tsimikas, 68): 6
For Gakpo 78, Luis Diaz
Adrian, Bobby Clark, Kaide Gordon, and James McConnell were all replacements who were not used.
In charge of
7 for Jurgen Klopp
There is nothing to be unhappy about. He got just the right amount of “rest and rhythm” because none of his star players played the whole 90 minutes.
He will be happy with how things turned out after he chose to play Gakpo in the middle and Nunez on the wing.
