As Kylian Mbappe enters the final six months of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), the football world is buzzing with speculation about his future. The French superstar, a reported transfer target for Liverpool, has reportedly agreed to forgo a £69 million loyalty bonus to facilitate a smoother departure from the French giants.
Mbappe, 25, signed a lucrative contract with PSG in 2022 after the club successfully fended off strong interest from Real Madrid. However, this season saw a dispute between the Ligue 1 champions and Mbappe, leading to his exclusion from the pre-season tour of Asia after he informed the club that he wouldn’t be signing a one-year contract extension as expected.
Despite the discord, Mbappe received an 80 million euro loyalty bonus for staying with PSG beyond the summer transfer window and being reintegrated into new manager Luis Enrique’s squad. In a surprising move, Mbappe waived the first installment of the bonus and is reportedly willing to forgo the entire amount if he leaves Paris this summer.
With the financial complexities in play, Mbappe is now free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a new club. Liverpool, who have reportedly held discussions with the player, are poised to capitalize on his uncertain future. While Real Madrid was initially considered the frontrunner, recent reports suggest that Jurgen Klopp’s Reds have become the new favorites for Mbappe’s signature.
In a 2022 interview with the Telegraph, Mbappe hinted at Liverpool’s appeal, stating, “I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favorite club of my mum. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her! It’s a good club, and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco, I met them. It’s a big club.”
Despite the speculation, Mbappe hasn’t ruled out staying in Paris, stating after PSG’s French Super Cup victory over Toulouse, “I’m very, very, very motivated for this year. It’s very important. As I said, we’ve got titles to go after, and we’ve already won one, so that’s already done. After that, no, I haven’t made up my mind yet.”
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi praised Mbappe’s return to the squad, emphasizing his incredible talent and character. The ongoing saga adds an extra layer of intrigue to Mbappe’s future, with Liverpool positioned as a strong contender for the coveted forward.
