Emmy Winner John Oliver Hilariously Honors Liverpool Stars in Memorable Speech

As John Oliver won yet another Emmy, he talked about Liverpool stars Alisson, Trent-Alexander Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk.

When his TV show “Last Week Tonight” won the award for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series, the British comic saw how far his “winners’ speech” could go. He started to name the Liverpool football team.This is the eighth year in a row that the HBO show has won an Outstanding Series award.

And Oliver, who was thrilled that his writers had won an award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, started to praise his favorite baseball team, the Reds.

He only named three players before host Anthony Anderson’s mother Doris, who was introduced to the crowd as “play-off mama” and told to end long talks, gave him a hint that he was going too long.

“Thank you so much to my staff. Many of them are here tonight,” he said to start his speech.Thanks to HBO and our constantly mad lawyers. “Thank you to Kate, my wife, who is here tonight.”

After telling his kids he was sorry he forgot to get them Pokemon cards, he turned his attention to Jurgen Klopp’s team and said, “I’m not leaving until Anthony Anderson’s mom plays me off.”

“Now I’m going to start reading off the names of the Liverpool football team.”

Oliver grew up in Birmingham with parents from Merseyside. In 2016, he talked to Liverpool’s media team about how his family works.”Both sides of my family are from Liverpool,” he said. Because my mom’s family is from Knotty Ash and my dad’s family is from Wirral, I had to root for Liverpool.

“That was made clear to me in a pretty strong way when I was young.” I could pick other things in my life besides a team!

“Even though I grew up in Birmingham, I was a Liverpool fan.”

I had a good time in Istanbul in the 2005 Champions League final. As I watched the game in London, my dad called.

“He was holding back tears as he said, ‘Remember this day, son, remember this day!'” He was right, and it was amazing.
