The match, held at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe, saw Ivory Coast struggle both offensively and defensively. Drogba emphasized the need for the team to critically assess and make necessary changes. He voiced his concern about Ivory Coast, a nation capable of hosting such a tournament, facing elimination in such a manner, indicating deeper issues within the team.

Ivory Coast’s coach, Jean-Louis Gasset, also expressed his disappointment, calling the situation a “nightmare.” Despite good preparation and control over the game, his team failed to capitalize on their chances while Equatorial Guinea efficiently converted their limited opportunities. Gasset still holds onto hope for advancement to the knockout stages, though he acknowledged the team’s reliance on other match outcomes is not ideal.

Fan frustration at the team’s performance was evident, leading to heightened security at the stadium. Despite the team’s efforts, evidenced by their 22 shots, only three were on target.

The two-time AFCON champions, Ivory Coast, still have a slim chance to progress. Their advancement depends on the outcome of the match between Cameroon and Gambia. Ivory Coast needs Cameroon to lose, given their own mixed results in the tournament so far.
